William the 1st or William the conqueror was
believed to be born in 1027 and died in 1087.
He was the illegitimate son of Robert 1st,
duke of Normandy, and succeeded to the
dukedom in 1035. While visiting England in
the year 1051 he was named successor to the
throne. In 1066, William raised an army and
crossed the Channel. He fought the Battle of
Hasting, after defeat, he was crowned king.
William the 1st was one of the greatest
English monarchs and pivotal figures in
European history.
